Interesting Facts About St George's Day:

  • Saint George’s Day has been celebrated annually on 23 April since 1222.
  • George is the patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers. It’s also believed that he looks after those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis.
  • Saint George’s flag features a red cross on a white field and was adopted by England in 1190.
  • The name George is taken from the Greek ‘georgos’ meaning ‘farmer’ or ‘earth-worker’. Many people pray to Saint George for a good harvest, and his memorial on 23 April occurs as crops are beginning to grow.
  • The George and the Dragon story was adapted centuries after his death to immortalise the legend.
