This term we will be doing some very exciting learning at Mulgrave Primary School. Our whole school project is inventions and we will begin the term with each year group using the animation BIBO. BIBO is a beautifully animated short film about a lonely robot who sells ice cream. In order to survive he recreates an imaginary world where he lives every day, like he did during the best time of his life. Nursery to year 6 will use the whole school film as a context for their writing before spending the rest of the term focusing their English, history, D.T, art, music and science learning around inventions!

Please keep checking Twitter @MulgravePrimary to see the fantastic learning which is happening!

Year 1/2

In year one the core text linked to inventions is ‘The Most Magnificent Thing’ and year one children are using this book to explore different verbs before creating their own invention and generating a set of instructions. When the year one children came into their classroom on the first day back they were presented with some very strange objects!

Year two are using the core text ‘Flint the Inventor’ as the starting point of their writing. The children will be using the events in the text to write their own newspaper report about the hamburgers falling from the sky in Flint’s latest invention! The children in year two were presented with a time capsule on the first day back and had to use the clues about what the text is about.

Year 3/4

In year three the children will be using the core text ‘The Darkest Dark’ and they will be considering the theme of overcoming challenges and inventing things to make our lives better. As part of their learning, year three re-enacted a space shuttle launch. In English the children will be writing non-chronological reports.

Year four will be using the core text ‘Six Dots’ as a context for their writing in English. They will write biographies linked to the character in the book and how he has overcame difficulties he faced as a child.

Year 5/6

The children in year five and year six will be using the challenging core text ‘The War of the Worlds’ in English. They will be writing a speech from the Martian’s perspective, exploring emotive language and rhetoric. The children will then move onto writing a balanced argument looking at the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy sources.
