Year 5 & 6
At Mulgrave Primary School, we ensure that learning is planned for in a cross curricular way, this ensures that children are able to make links within their learning. Lessons challenge all pupils through a variety of activities, providing opportunities for feedback from adults and peers. Through high expectations of everyone at Mulgrave we aspire to achieve outstanding outcomes.
Summer Term 1
Our core text in English is the classic from William Golding: Lord of the Flies. A tale of stranded schoolboys, at first enjoying freedom from adult rules, but it soon becomes factious, leading to deadly conflict.
In English, Year 5 will be writing monologues from the point of view of characters from Lord of the Flies. We will use writing and grammatical techniques learned this year to really push our pupils learning forward and ready them for Year 6.
We are beginning the term by understanding how Golding has created personalities for the characters by hinting at traits within the boys, allowing readers to piece together these clues to judge the characters themselves, bringing us closer to them and their fates.
In Mathematics we will be taking our learning about fractions and decimals from the Spring term and moving on to percentages. After consolidating our learning in this area, we will be moving on to Geometry, including shape, angles, area and volume.
Please encourage your child to continue to practice times tables and the various strategies to add, subtract, multiply and divide during this term. If you have access to the internet, the children have logins for IXL, if your child has lost their login, please tell them to ask Mr Calnan or Miss Begum.
In Year 5 our learning in Science will be based upon Forces, studying the effects of air and water resistance and gravity, studying theories put forth from Galileo and Newton.
Our Geography topic for the summer term is the River Thames, looking at its physical geographical features and the biodiversity of creatures and plant-life from source to mouth. We are planning to visit the Thames Barrier and will update you as soon as they are booked. In Computing we are beginning the term by making stop motion films and will take part in further Computing debates with our expert, Ji.

A list of expected spelling words can be found on the internet: Google Years 3-6 spelling list. Encourage your child to familiarize themselves with the spellings of these words. They must practice their spellings daily as they need this to successfully achieve good levels in the SATs.

How can you help?
Please continue to find time to read with your child every day and ask questions about the characters and their motives, the story setting, plot and subject matter. Children need to be able to read fluently and confidently and with good comprehension for their timed SATs tests.
Support your child with spelling (without practicing your spellings, you will find the grammar test extremely difficult), times-tables practice and mental maths in preparation for SAT’s.
They need to be proficient in their times tables and using mental methods and be able to apply their spellings to their work.
