Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage at Mulgrave School we aim to provide our children with the best start in life. Working alongside other agencies, we support children by engaging with their parents, carers, extended family and the wider community. Through play, in a safe, caring environment, all our children are encouraged to become creative, confident, independent, lifelong learners.

In the Nursery and Reception classes we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS), which is especially suited to the needs of young children. There are seven areas of learning and development, which are all inter-connected.  The following three prime areas are particularly important for children’s capacity to learn and helping them build good relationships with others.

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Laguage

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Summer Term 1

Our topic this half term is ‘A term amongst the animals’ and we will be learning about different habitats and what animals live in each of them (ocean, farm and jungle). Children will extend their vocabulary by using descriptive language when depicting animals and find out facts about their lives. They will also continue developing their writing skills by building up sentences as they are describing their favourite animals.
We will carry out investigations to develop skills in predicting, discussing and asking questions about our learning.
We will be reading a wide range of stories, basing our work around the texts, characters and settings.   A variety of rich and engaging texts will be read to bring the topic alive, such as Commotion in the Ocean, Farmyard Hullabaloo, the little red hen, Rumble in the Jungle and Monkey Puzzle as well as various non-fiction texts. These will form the basis for meaningful and exciting writing.
The children will continue to learn maths through group sessions and focus group work. Children will enjoy a range of stimulating and practical activities that will develop their skills in counting, calculation and shape, space and measure. We will be developing their skills in recording and explaining the processes we go through. Children will be learning about how to count in 2’s and 10’s and develop other skills as problem solving when facing new number challenges.
We will spend time exploring our environment and use our senses to investigate our world.
All the learning we do is supported by visits, visitors and trips out.
Throughout the year the Reception children will be attending education visits. The details of the trips will be sent to you separately nearer the time. Please see your child’s class teacher if you are interested in supporting us.
Please find below a few websites that you may find useful to explore at home with your child to support their learning in the EYFS curriculum
