Summer Term 2

YEAR 1

The children will begin the term reflecting on their journey so far in year 1 by looking back through their books and discussing their progress. This will lead to their report comment. Art week follows where they will be exploring recounts through the ‘Rainbow Fish’ book and producing 3D models of ocean creatures. The children will also be exposed to poetry through other stories about animals. Phonics screening will take place during week 2.

Art 
The children will be designing and making sea creatures through sculpture focusing on texture and colour

Maths
This final term sees the children investigating money, position and direction and consolidating the four operations in preparation for year 2. They will continue refining their reasoning skills in all mentioned areas.

RE
We will be looking at how celebrations are different in several religions.
 
History
We will be looking at chronology and how events are placed on a timeline.  We will learn about 3 different historical events.
 
 
In year one children will be provided with a reading book and the children can change these books on a weekly basis.  We would encourage you to read with your child every night and talk to them about what they are reading. If you would like to discuss how you can help your child at home, please see your child's class teacher. We welcome parental involvement in the life of our school. YEAR 2

Our learning this term will be based around our core text ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. The children will begin the term by exploring the themes of being afraid of the dark and bravery within the story. They will be immersed in looking at the relationships between different character. The children will write a story about the owl who was afraid of the dark and will use the owls as the stimulus of their art work and looking at nature.

In maths this half term, the children will be focused on reinforcing place value and operations in preparation for year 3. They will move beyond ones, tens and hundreds and introduce thousands as well as how to use place value to assist in mental calculations. The children will also focus on ensuring they are solid in their number bonds and times tables. They will re-cap the 2,5,10 and 3 times tables while introducing the 4, 6 and 7s as well as associated division facts. The children will move on to investigations and problem solving, using the knowledge they have gained throughout the year to explore things link measurement, shape and data.

Our science learning will be linked STEM Week. The children will be investigating the topic “Poos from the Past”. They will learn about animal poos and learn to classify them. They will then learn about how people have dealt with their own poo throughout history.
