This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum Music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Our Music Specialist delivers weekly lessons to each class. Classes rotate and have 2 hours one week followed by 1 hour the following week so each class has an average of 90 minutes of curriculum music each week. We use Charanga’s curriculum, which is based on the Model Music Curriculum (non-statutory government guidance 2021). Children with SEND are supported by TAs during lessons ensuring that they can take part. Our Music Lead regularly visits lessons to ensure inclusivity for all children is maintained. We began working more closely with our local Music Hub – Royal Greenwich Music Service in 2025. We loan instruments through them and they are supporting us to work toward integrating more instrumental learning within weekly curriculum lessons. |
Part B: Co-curriculum Music:
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
Our Music Specialist runs a guitar group after school two days a week - this is totally free of charge and is offered to students in years 4 and 5. There are 5 children in each group. Our Music Lead runs a choir on Tuesday afternoons of 30-40 children which is free and open to all pupils from years 3 to 6. Children who are keen to do extra singing practise during lunch time can do this in our Music Lead’s classroom. |
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
Our children take part in weekly singing assemblies with our Music Lead and weekly singing performances in our Friday celebration assemblies which parents are invited to attend. We are taking part in this year’s Singing Spectacular at Blackheath Halls organised by Royal Greenwich Music Service. This will be both an opportunity for the choir to perform as well as for them to hear live music performed by other schools and a professional live band. We do a Christmas performance in our local church and have taken part in other local performances including: Sparkle in the Park; the Windrush Performance and the Holocaust Memorial Service. We also put on our own Christmas performance at school where each class sings a song interspersed with songs from our choir. |
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
We are working with our local music hub to integrate more instrumental learning into our class curriculum lessons with the plan being that this can lead to more performances in the future. |
